  14.             This ArcView shapefile contains a representation of the
  15.             major roads within the National Coal Assessment's Northern
  16.             Rocky Mountain and Great Plains Coal Assessment area.
  17.             This theme was created specifically for the National Coal
  18.             Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains
  19.             and Great Plains Region.
  20.         Purpose:
  21.             The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the
  22.             USGS.  This assessment identifies and characterizes
  23.             the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the
  24.             bulk of the Nation's coal-derived energy during the
  25.             next few decades.  This assessment is different from
  26.             previous USGS assessments because digital files
  27.             and databases are being stored in standardized formats,
  28.             and being analyzed using a Geographic Information System
  29.             (GIS).

  113.                 The four hardcopy road maps of MT, ND, SD, and WY
  114.                 provided all of the relevant data for the coverage.

  116.             Process_Description:
  117.                 The four paper maps were scanned to produce digital
  118.                 images, which were defined as having a geographic
  119.                 projection and registered in ARC/INFO.  The highways
  120.                 were digitized as arcs in ArcEdit, and the coverage was
  121.                 subsequently given line topology with the BUILD command.
  122.                 The arcs were attributed, projected to geographic and
  123.                 converted to a shapefile ArcView.
